For our first full day in Vienna our instructors planned a tour of Schlo\u00df Sch\u00f6nbrunn, the summer palace of the Hapsburg family, the imperial rulers of the Austro-Hungarian Empire.\u00a0 The palace while massive in scale is actually quiet modest in comparison to most palaces.\u00a0 Some of the mansions in New Port are much more extravagant, for example.\u00a0 In my opinion the much more impressive feature of the complex is the enormous park that surrounds the palace, which was used for large celebrations and summer hunts by the Imperial family but now has been turned into a public park.\u00a0 A portion of the park has also been converted into a zoo.\u00a0 After our tour most of us went to a restaurant near our hotel that was established over one hundred years ago and now offers a lunch buffet.\u00a0 For dessert we went to a Lindor chocolate store on the way back to the hotel.<\/span><\/p>\n

For the evening we found out that in downtown Vienna there is a huge outdoor ice rink, so many of us went to check it out.\u00a0 The rink is right next to city hall, which more than holds its own in comparison to the rest of historic Vienna, and has two large oval rinks which are connected with an intertwining ‘race track.’\u00a0 Now I have not been ice skating since I was about ten and it was not a great experience.\u00a0 All I remember is holding onto the wall that surrounded the rink and falling down a lot.\u00a0 But I figured it was time to try again.\u00a0 Actually for the most part I was pretty happy with my performance on the ice, but I am sure that I looked like an idiot to the more experience skaters as I was flailing around the rink.\u00a0 Over the course of about three hours I only fell down twice, but on the second time I hit my head pretty hard, which made getting off the ice a bit of a struggle.\u00a0 Thankfully my headache went away after a couple of hours and I felt no ill-effects thereafter.\u00a0 Even though I ended on a bad note I probably will go skating again in the future, something I probably would not have said if I did not go skating tonight.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
